Syrian Authorities Detain Former Sednaya Prison Guard

(MENAFN) Syria’s Interior Ministry reported on Friday that officials had detained former military police sergeant Mohammad Imad Mahrez, who previously served as a guard and jailer at Sednaya Prison. The facility is widely known for its history of torture, mistreatment, and executions during the Assad period.

According to the ministry, internal security units succeeded in "arrest former military police sergeant Mahrez." It further clarified that Mahrez "worked as a prison guard at Sednaya Military Prison since 2015 under the ousted regime."

Authorities have launched an investigation to assess the actions attributed to him and to proceed with appropriate legal measures based on the findings.

Sednaya Prison, situated north of Damascus, is regarded as one of Syria’s most infamous military detention centers. Following the start of the Syrian revolution in 2011, it reportedly became a site where thousands of individuals were imprisoned due to their opposition to the government.

Over the years, the prison has been repeatedly referenced in reports by international human rights organizations because of widespread allegations of torture and harsh treatment.
