China rules out G20 meeting with Japan’s Takaichi over Taiwan dispute

(MENAFN) China announced Monday that Premier Li Qiang will not hold talks with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during the G20 summit in Johannesburg, citing escalating tensions over Taiwan.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said Takaichi’s recent comments “seriously violate” the spirit of bilateral political documents and “cause fundamental damage to the political foundation.” She stressed that “no matter which political party or figure is in power in Japan,” Tokyo must adhere to its commitments on Taiwan, urging Japan “to be responsible for the history and its relations with China.”

Mao warned Japan to “stop crossing the line and playing with fire, retract the wrongful remarks and deeds and honor its commitments to China with real actions.” She added that Japan should “correct its wrongdoings to avoid the further undermining of the bilateral relations,” referring to Beijing’s travel advisory urging Chinese citizens not to visit Japan.

Earlier this month, Takaichi said any Chinese military move against Taiwan — including a naval blockade — could constitute a “survival-threatening situation,” allowing Japan to invoke its collective self-defense rights.

China on Friday advised its nationals to avoid Japan following Takaichi’s remarks, citing “multiple criminal offenses and incidents of attacks against Chinese nationals in Japan this year.” Tokyo lodged a protest Saturday, while China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism reiterated its travel warning Sunday. Kyodo News reported that several major Chinese travel agencies have suspended sales of trips to Japan.
