Red Cross Urges Respect for International Law in Peace Efforts
Speaking at a panel during the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in southern Türkiye on Saturday, ICRC Vice President Jurg Lauber emphasized that rules governing armed conflict must be respected, warning that increasing disregard for them is complicating peace processes.
“How wars are fought influences how and when they can be ended,” he said.
Lauber underscored that humanitarian law plays a key role in preserving “a minimum of shared humanity” during armed conflict, while also helping create conditions for de-escalation, ceasefires, and eventual peace agreements.
He also highlighted an initiative launched in September 2024 by the ICRC together with Brazil, China, France, Jordan, Kazakhstan, and South Africa aimed at elevating international humanitarian law as a global political priority.
According to Lauber, 106 countries have now joined the Global Initiative to Galvanize Political Commitment to International Humanitarian Law.
He further noted that humanitarian organizations often retain access and trust in conflict environments where political actors may struggle to engage, particularly in fragmented or complex wars.
