Russia Recalls Ambassador from Armenia Amid Rising EU Integration Tensions
The Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Ambassador Sergey Kopyrkin was summoned back to Moscow over concerns that recent actions by the Armenian leadership are undermining cooperation within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), according to reports.
In its statement, the ministry said the decision was linked to Armenia’s steps toward closer alignment with the EU, which Moscow argues are damaging existing economic and institutional ties within the Russia-led bloc.
The move comes amid growing friction between the two countries as Armenia continues to pursue deeper engagement with European institutions while remaining formally within the EAEU framework.
Earlier developments indicate that Armenian authorities have reiterated their interest in expanding relations with the EU, prompting warnings from Russian officials that such a direction could negatively affect Armenia’s economic benefits and participation in the Eurasian integration system.
According to reports, the recall of the ambassador is the latest signal of strain in relations between Moscow and Yerevan, reflecting widening geopolitical differences between the long-standing partners.
