Crocus represents the arrival of spring and the renewal that comes with the new growing season”
— Peggy Anne Montgomery, horticulturist
PHILADELPHIA, PA, UNITED STATES, August 17, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Crocus has been selected as the 2026 Bulb of the Year by both the National Garden Bureau (NGB) and Flowerbulb.eu, giving the spring-blooming bulb dual recognition from two horticultural organizations.

The selections highlight crocus as an early-season flowering bulb known for its ability to bloom in late winter and early spring. Crocuses are generally hardy in USDA Zones 4-8 and grow in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Their early blooms can appear while temperatures remain cold, and some crocus species produce natural antifreeze proteins that help protect their cells from freezing temperatures.

Crocus is also known for its ability to multiply and naturalize in suitable growing conditions. Over time, established plantings can form larger groups of flowers in lawns, borders, rock gardens, and other landscape settings. Crocuses can also be grown in containers.

“Crocus represents the arrival of spring and the renewal that comes with the new growing season,” said Peggy Anne Montgomery, horticulturist representing Flowerbulb.eu. “Its early flowering, adaptability and ability to return year after year have made it a longstanding part of spring gardens.”

Crocus corms are typically planted in fall, allowing them to establish roots before winter. Once established, many varieties return annually under suitable growing conditions. The plants generally require little maintenance after flowering, although foliage should be allowed to mature naturally following bloom.
